Camel is a forum for reflection on the art I'm seeing, the market news I'm hearing, opinions on the philosophy and history of fine art, and for sharing updates about the publication of my writing and the shows I'm organizing. I spend as much time as I can in the studios of young artists in LA trying to help them to find new ways of thinking about what they're doing and how to make their work better. This mailing list will share those insights and artists with a broader audience. I believe we are collectively lost about how to make appropriate value judgments when it comes to the appraisal of aesthetic quality and I hope this newsletter will seed some alternative approaches.
I will call it Camel, for I admire the camel's consistent march through the desert. ChatGPT says: "The camel thrives in a sparse landscape, carrying richness inside. It’s an ancient traveler, like a philosopher crossing a desert. A strong choice if your writing journeys through challenging, minimal, or under-recognized terrain in art."
